The handover of the new £30million Elgin Academy to Moray Council has been delayed.

The council had been expected to take possession of the new school towards the end of next month.

However, it has emerged that the contractors will not be in a position to hand over the building on the scheduled date.

Parents have been informed of the delay in a letter from head teacher David Barnett.

A council spokesman said: “The hold-up is disappointing but is outwith the council’s control.

“We are not in a position at this stage to give a date for the handover or a date for staff and pupils moving into the new school.

“However, the council is working closely with the contractors to ensure that the delay is kept to a minimum and the school is also working hard to ensure that, in the meantime, there is no disruption to the daily teaching and learning regime.”

Work on the new school, which is being built adjacent to the existing Elgin Academy, got under way in June 2010.

The current building – part of which is a five-storey tower block – dates from the late 1960s and will be demolished once its replacement is completed.

The new school has a capacity of 1050 pupils and features a range of classroom accommodation plus a games hall, gym, fitness suite and dance studio.

Outdoor facilities will include a full-size floodlit all-weather pitch, two grass pitches and a six-lane running track.
