Reablement Consultation

Date Added - 05/01/12

Home care services in Moray are being enhanced to maximise the long-term independence and quality of life of people with social care needs.

The benefits of taking a reablement approach to provide better outcomes for people will be highlighted at a series of information and consultation events which are taking place over the next two weeks, organised by Moray Council.

Service manager Charles McKerron will highlight the opportunities reablement provides to work with people to develop the skills needed to remain safely in their own home.

Reablement is short-term support designed to give older people or people with disabilities the confidence to manage as many daily living tasks as possible on their own.

They may need help at the moment with personal care or to prepare meals, for example. The aim of the service is to support them to manage these tasks on their own whenever possible, rather than having other people doing them on their behalf.

A successful reablement pilot ran in the Keith and Speyside area in 2009. A new draft policy has now been drawn up, setting out how everyone referred to Moray Council for an assessment of their social care needs will be considered for reablement. For those already receiving support, the benefits of reablement to them in their situation would be discussed as part of the regular review of their care package.

Information events to explain more about reablement, and to encourage people to feedback their views, have been organised. People already attending many of the current day services have been invited to attend separate meetings.

The public community events will be held at:

  • Rothes: Linnburn Day Centre, High Street, on January 10 from 1-3pm
  • Buckie: Clydeville, Queen Street, on January 11 from 1-3pm
  • Elgin: Town Hall Supper Room on January 12 from 10am – noon
  • Forres: Forres House Community Centre Green Room on January 16 from 1-3pm.
